Lee Agri-Media has created a relief fund to help farmers and ranchers affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana.

“Hurricane Harvey caused devastation and losses like we’ve never seen before in our lifetime,” Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said. “Farmers and ranchers throughout the Coastal Bend and along the Texas coast are trying to pick up the pieces and figure out what to do next to rebuild.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declared a disaster area that contained about 1.2 million cattle, just over a quarter of the state’s cowherd, according to Texas Farm Bureau.

“It’s an historic storm and a disaster for many farmers and ranchers. The torrential rainfall wreaked havoc on Texas agriculture at the worst possible time — harvest season,” Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening said. “Hurricane Harvey struck an area of the state known for cattle, cotton, rice and other row crops.”

Some of the agriculture losses will be covered by insurance and the disaster declaration, but not all.

National media have focused on the large Houston metro area affected by this historic flood, but very little has been mentioned about the large rural area and number of farmers and ranchers impacted by this disaster.

Lee Agri-Media started its fund to help these farmers and ranchers by bringing the generosity of other producers in the publisher’s coverage area to the aid of Texas and Louisiana.

Lee Agri-Media is the publisher of ag publications in the Midwest including Iowa Farmer Today, Minnesota Farm Guide, Farm and Ranch Guide, Agri-View, Midwest Messenger, Missouri Farmer Today, Illinois Farmer Today, Tri-State Neighbor, Prairie Star and Today’s Producer.
